First rule out a measurement problem
Oven displays cycle around a target; they do not necessarily hold one exact temperature every second. Use an oven-safe thermometer and measure across multiple cycles.
- Place the thermometer near the centre without touching a tray or wall.
- Select a normal bake setting.
- Allow the oven to complete preheat and stabilise.
- Record several readings at consistent intervals.
- Compare the average with the set temperature.
Do not use an infrared surface thermometer as a direct substitute for air-temperature measurement.
Check settings and cookware
Review:
- Celsius versus Fahrenheit
- convection conversion
- rapid-preheat mode
- delay start or Sabbath mode
- rack position
- oversized trays blocking airflow
- foil covering vents or the oven floor
- door closing and gasket condition
Dark or reflective pans and convection airflow can change browning even when the oven temperature is reasonable.
Use user calibration only when appropriate
If the average is consistently off by a modest amount, the model may allow an offset. Find the manual by model number and follow the documented range and sequence.
Do not keep increasing the offset to compensate for a fault. Large, erratic, or worsening errors need diagnosis.
Safe visual checks
With the appliance off and cool, look for:
- damaged door gasket

- error codes

Build a repeatable temperature record
Start from a cold oven and use the manufacturer’s recommended preheat indication, mode and rack position. If you use an oven-safe thermometer, place it where the food normally sits and observe several heating cycles rather than treating one momentary reading as the control temperature. Record set point, mode, rack, cookware, preheat completion, reading times and whether the error is consistently high, low or uneven. Do not touch or move a hot thermometer until the oven and tool are safe to handle.
Repeat once with the same setup. A stable offset across repeated tests is different from wide swings, one burned edge or a slow preheat. Convection mode, dark pans, crowded racks and opening the door can change cooking results without proving a failed sensor.
