An electric scooter’s true cost is purchase price plus finance, registration/insurance, charging, tyres, service, charger/electrical work and realistic battery risk—minus resale. Low electricity cost can be meaningful, but only if your daily range and charging access fit the scooter.
Which ownership case matches you?
Home charging, predictable commute
Use your actual residential tariff and daily km. This is usually the cleanest case for estimating running cost.
Shared parking or no private socket
Price the installation/permission problem before buying. A cheap scooter is not convenient if charging requires unsafe extension leads or unreliable access.
High daily mileage near real-world range limit
Stress-test hot weather, load, detours and battery ageing. Do not buy on certified range alone.
Used electric scooter
Verify battery condition, warranty transfer, charger, service history, ownership documents and any outstanding finance or app/account transfer.
Build a five-year cost sheet

Calculate charging cost from energy, not from “₹ per full charge” marketing
Use energy consumed and your tariff. If the scooter uses an illustrative 0.035 kWh/km and you ride 8,000 km a year at an illustrative blended ₹9/kWh, annual energy cost is 8,000 × 0.035 × 9 = ₹2,520. Replace those example inputs with your scooter’s measured consumption and actual tariff.
For comparison with petrol, use the same annual kilometres and realistic fuel efficiency. The running-cost advantage can be large, but ownership value still depends on upfront price, finance, service access and resale.
Battery warranty deserves its own review
Record coverage years/kilometres, capacity conditions if any, exclusions, water/impact rules, commercial-use restrictions, transferability and claim procedure. Ask whether labour, transport and diagnostic costs are covered.
If your ownership period extends beyond warranty, model a downside reserve rather than inserting a guaranteed replacement at a made-up date.
