An EV battery warranty is useful only if you understand exactly what triggers coverage. Record years, kilometres, capacity threshold if any, covered components, exclusions, transferability, required service/software conditions and claim procedure. “8-year battery warranty” is not enough information to predict a future claim.
Audit the warranty before you need it
1. Identify the warranty type
Separate defects/material failure from any capacity-retention promise. They may use different tests and remedies.
2. Write down both limits
Coverage may expire by time or kilometres, whichever comes first. Record the in-service date and odometer baseline.
3. Read exclusions before buying used
Look for collision, flood/water, modification, unauthorised repair, commercial use, charging or storage conditions and maintenance requirements.
4. Understand the claim remedy
Ask whether the remedy is repair, module replacement, remanufactured part or full-pack replacement and who pays diagnostics, towing or labour.
5. Preserve battery-health evidence
Keep service records, warnings, software updates and diagnostic reports. A trend is more useful than one range complaint.

Normal range variation alone needs a battery-degradation check
Range can move with speed, temperature, climate control, load, terrain and tyre pressure. If you suspect degradation, compare repeated data under similar conditions or obtain manufacturer/authorised diagnostic evidence rather than relying on one trip estimate.
Used EV: verify before paying
- Warranty start date and remaining kilometres.
- Whether warranty is transferable.
- Battery diagnostic or health report available from an authorised source.
- History of collisions, flood exposure or major repairs.
- Open recalls/service campaigns and software status.
- Exact serial/VIN relationship where documentation provides it.
