A low CIBIL score does not make every expensive loan a good solution. First verify the report for errors, work out why the score is weak, and decide whether the need is urgent. Compare secured or employer/family-supported options where appropriate before accepting a high-cost unsecured loan, and use the KFS/APR to compare the true cost.
Choose the least damaging route for your situation
Need is not urgent
Pause applications, correct genuine report errors, reduce revolving balances and build a period of on-time repayment before reapplying selectively.
Urgent essential expense
Compare insurance, employer advance, family support, secured borrowing or a smaller loan before high-cost unsecured credit. Keep the borrowing amount tightly linked to the need.
Rejected despite an apparently good report
Audit income, obligations, bank statements, enquiries, employer/profile rules and application inconsistencies rather than assuming score is the only factor.
Offer from an app or unfamiliar lender
Verify the regulated entity, KFS, APR, fees, repayment schedule and grievance details before sharing data or accepting disbursal.
Start with the report, not the score number
Download the full report and check active balances, overdue amounts, DPD/payment history, settled or written-off status, duplicate accounts and unknown enquiries. A low score caused by a reporting error needs a dispute; a low score caused by accurate missed payments needs better current behaviour and time.
Do not pay a “repair” service to file false disputes against accurate information.
Compare borrowing options by total cost and downside
| Option | Potential advantage | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Wait and rebuild eligibility | Avoids locking in high cost | Not suitable for a genuinely urgent need. |
| Smaller unsecured loan | Limits total interest exposure | Still expensive if APR is high. |
| Secured borrowing | May price lower | You put an asset at risk; unsuitable if repayment is uncertain. |
| Employer/family support | May avoid commercial interest | Can create employment or relationship obligations. |
| High-cost digital loan | Fast access | High APR/fees and data or collection risks if lender is unsuitable. |
Use the KFS before accepting an offer
For covered retail term loans, the KFS provides key facts including APR and charges. Compare APR, total repayment, EMI, tenure, net amount you actually receive, prepayment terms and penalties or charges disclosed under applicable rules.
Do not compare only the monthly EMI. A long tenure can make an unaffordable loan look smaller each month while increasing total outflow.
Red flags when your score makes you vulnerable
- “Guaranteed approval” before proper underwriting.
- Upfront payment to release a sanctioned loan to a personal account.
- No clear regulated lender identity or grievance details.
- Pressure to share OTPs or screen-control access.
- Loan amount larger than requested “because you qualify.”
- APR and charges hidden behind a weekly/daily repayment number.
