What to do first: turn the admission offer into a dated funding plan: tuition tranches, living costs, deposits, insurance, travel, currency buffer and money needed before the first disbursement. Only then ask lenders to finance the same requirement.
Scope: India-based borrowing for overseas study. Course, destination, foreign-exchange route and lender policy all change the answer; sanction letters and KFS documents control.
Current official check:RBI’s KFS rules require covered banks and NBFCs to disclose APR and the repayment schedule for retail term loans. Use PM-Vidyalaxmi as an official comparison/application channel, but still read every sanction and disbursement condition.
Build the full education budget first
List expenses by academic term and currency:
- tuition and mandatory university fees
- housing and deposits
- food and local transport
- insurance and health requirements
- visa, travel, and immigration charges
- books, equipment, and laptop
- examination or licensing fees
- emergency reserve
Separate costs the lender will finance from costs your family must pay. Add a transparent currency-risk buffer rather than hiding it inside a larger loan request.
Compare the right lender types
Public-sector banks, private banks, non-bank lenders, and overseas lenders can differ on eligibility, collateral, co-borrower rules, sanctioned expenses, disbursement, interest structure, and servicing.
For each offer, record:
- sanctioned amount and margin contribution
- secured or unsecured structure
- collateral valuation and legal costs
- co-borrower obligations
- benchmark, spread, and reset frequency
- simple or compounded interest treatment during study and moratorium
- when full EMI begins
- processing, insurance, and documentation charges
- prepayment and refinance terms
- currency of disbursement and repayment
- conditions tied to university, course, country, or visa
Understand moratorium interest
A repayment holiday is not automatically interest-free. Request two written illustrations:
- no payment during study and moratorium
- monthly payment of accrued interest during that period
Compare the balance when regular repayment begins and the total repayment under both. This reveals the cost of capitalised interest better than a promotional EMI.
Collateral and co-borrower risk
When property or another asset is offered, obtain independent legal advice and understand:
- ownership and consent
- valuation method and margin
- mortgage or charge creation
- original-document custody
- insurance requirements
- consequences of default
- release process after closure
A parent or other co-borrower is legally responsible according to the loan contract. Do not treat the role as a reference signature.
Check the institution and course assumptions
A lender may assess university ranking, course employability, visa status, country risk, and expected earnings. Approval before admission or visa may be conditional.
Confirm what happens if:
- the visa is delayed or denied
- the student changes course or institution
- the semester is deferred
- the student leaves early
- the currency moves sharply
- the university refunds tuition to a different account
Disbursement controls
Education loans may be disbursed directly to the institution or in stages. Ask for:
- required invoice and deadline
- exchange-rate conversion method
- remittance and correspondent-bank charges
- proof of payment
- treatment of refunds
- process for living-expense disbursement
Late disbursement can create academic or visa problems, so verify timelines in writing without assuming a guaranteed date.
Compare future affordability
Model at least three cases:
- expected graduate income
- delayed employment
- lower salary or currency movement
Include living costs after graduation, taxes, and other family obligations. A loan that requires an unrealistically high starting salary is not made safe by a long tenure.
Fraud and pressure warnings
Avoid anyone who:
- guarantees approval or visa outcome
- asks for payment to release a sanctioned loan
- alters admission, income, or collateral documents
- uses an unofficial portal that resembles a government site
- asks you to sign incomplete forms
- hides the regulated lender’s legal name
Turn the admission letter into a dated cash map
Create one row for every amount and date: acceptance deposit, visa-fund evidence, first tuition tranche, housing deposit, insurance, travel, later tuition and monthly living costs. For each row mark currency, last safe payment date, documents required by the lender, portion financed, family contribution and fallback if disbursement is late. This exposes the common gap between a large sanction and cash that is actually available when the university needs it.
Next, quote the same cash map to every lender. If one excludes a deposit, pays only against an invoice, requires margin before each tranche or cannot release living costs to the intended account, show that as a funding gap rather than hiding it inside the interest-rate comparison. Use the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal to discover the current official application channel, then treat each lender’s KFS and sanction conditions as the controlling offer.
Keep a decision log for changes after sanction
Record who approved the university, course, intake, country, co-borrower and collateral facts. Before deferral, transfer, visa change or refund, ask the lender in writing how the change affects eligibility and where money must return. Keep university invoices, SWIFT/remittance confirmations and lender ledger entries together. A clean trail matters if the foreign institution refunds less because of bank charges or if a payment is credited to the wrong term.
Finally, stress-test employment six and twelve months later than planned, a weaker rupee on undisbursed costs, and a lower starting salary. The result is not a prediction; it is a limit on how much collateral and family cash flow the plan can safely expose.
