A "settled" or "written-off" status can concern lenders because it may show that the full contractual amount was not repaid.
Before paying or negotiating:
- ask the lender for an itemised statement
- obtain the proposed settlement or closure terms in writing
- confirm how the account will be reported after payment
- retain the no-dues or closure certificate
- recheck the credit report after the lender's next reporting cycle
Do not pay an unverified "credit repair" company that promises to delete accurate negative information. Accurate lender-reported history is not normally removable merely because a fee is paid.
