Bank vs NBFC Education Loan for Study Abroad: Total-Cost Comparison

“Bank versus NBFC” is too broad to answer by label. Compare the actual sanction offers using the same university cost, disbursement dates and repayment end date. A faster approval can be valuable, but only if the total structure still works.

Compare two education-loan offers fairly

Hold the education plan constant, then compare what each lender changes.

1

Fix one funding requirement. Use the same tuition, living-cost buffer and disbursement calendar for both offers.

2

Calculate debt at EMI start. Include interest accrued before regular repayment and all financed fees.

3

Add cross-border friction. Include remittance fees, conversion spread and any requirement to use a particular payment route.

4

Stress-test service delays. Ask how urgent tuition tranches are released, what documents are needed and who handles overseas payment failures.

5

Choose on total fit. Balance cost, certainty of funding, collateral risk and repayment flexibility. A lower rate is not enough if the disbursement structure cannot meet university deadlines.

Run one downside case

Assume the rupee weakens before future disbursements and employment starts later than expected. Recalculate the INR funding gap and EMI affordability. The better lender is the one whose complete structure survives that case with the least damaging trade-off.
